Screen refreshing problem

When I select an screen icon with the mouse, most times the desktop goes through a reboot cycle. I am not sure whether I have inadvertently had some settings changed, but a serviceman told me this was not unusual with XP!! It did not do this before so I am looking for the real cause.Any help appreciated
