Spell checker?

message from Becks on 31 May 2004
Hello, all.

I recently upgraded from WIN98 to XP and was disappointed to find that the
latter didn't even come with a spell checker as standard - that I would have
to have certain Microsoft Office Programmes installed if I wanted one.

Does anyone know of a good free spell checker I can download, or perhaps
give me the link to an online spell checker?

It would have to be an English/English one, not an American/English.

Win98 didn't come with a spellchecker either. That comes with whatever word
processing software you choose to purchase and install.

Why would a spell checker be available. You can't sell word processor's =
without one. 99% of people buy programs to use on their computer. If it =
was included then 99% of people would have to BUY TWO spell checkers, =
one with windows and one with office. Spell checkers aren't free and MS =
pays a license fee for each copy. They only do this for things that will =
be used by most customers, such as the license they pay to view jpeg =
files or gif files. They don't pay the MP3 license fee as most people =
don't make MP3s.

You aren't referring to Outlook Express by any chance?

OE 6 does not come with it's own spell check. You need Word or an MS
Office program or you can download a free spell check at one of these
sites.

Yes, I do mean Outlook Express. WIN 98 1st ed. came with a spell checker as
standard in OE so I assumed XP would have one too. Seems daft to me.

Thanks for the links, I'll check them out.

No it didn't.

Spell Checker is not and never has been a part of OE nor any Windows OS. It
is part of an application, i.e., WORD etc. or some free or other
application.

It didn't come standard with 98. You must have also had Word or an MS
Office program at the time. The free downloads work fine and will
appear on the toolbar and you will have a Spelling tab in
tools>Options.
Good luck,

Okay, this information is very well presented, clearly and
I was more than slightly irritated after buying works and installing
it to find that my OE still had no spell checker available..

If MS presented it's knowledge base as well, there would be one heck
of a lot less aggravation and problems would get fixed much
easier.....

kudos!

I installed the .dll file according to instructions, and rebooted the
machine, unfortunately it is still not operational in OE..

*sigh*
