Reinstalled XP Pro and now I can't find my files and apps |

So I did a repair install of xp pro and when it booted up I had a different user icon and all of my files and apps are nowhere to be found. When I check the disk volume on the hard drive it shows that those files are still on the hard drive. They are not in another user folder...and when I use search it can't find them. I downloaded a couple free software recovery programs and it finds these files but I try to restore them I get either an error msg or I'm told I have to buy the real version (instead of evaluation version) to recover my files. Can someone help me out please? Thanks for your time.
