RE: XP doesn't remember taskbar settings |
| message from Ashokan Achari [MSFT] on 02 Jun 2004 |
Hi,
It seems that since a few days, XP (pro) can no longer remember the
settings and/or layout of my taskbar. I should mention I have a taskbar 3
times the regular height, and a quicklaunch bar. It used to work perfectly,
but recently (after a heavy (though error-free) shutdown, IIRC), when I
reboot and login, XP always uses its own layout, and always activates
'Search Assistant' in the taskbar. The quicklaunch items seem to be placed
in alphabetical order. I've already disabled Search Assistant for
(I)Explorer in the registry, but still I have this annoying problem.
So my question is: is there anything I can do to get XP to remember my
personal taskbar layout again? I've tried Taskbar Repair Tool+, but it
doesn't seem to be able to do it. Are there any config files that set these
things at shutdown/startup/login?
Any useful tips highly appreciating,
SOLUTION:

Please copy the lines to a text editor like notepad and save the file as
fix.reg. Then double click the file.

I'm sorry to hear you're having trouble, chris, but the procedure I
described solved the problem I was having. Otherwise I would not have posted
it.
What exactly did you do? All I did was remove WindowsSA using
configuration->software. I never got any message about the quicklaunch bar
having been removed, just this Windows Search Assistant.
Maybe you can login in safe mode and reset your system to yesterday?

Thanks for the reg, Ashok, but I fixed my problem another way, ie by
removing Windows Search Assistant. At first I thought this was the built-in
XP search assistant, but when I removed it, IExplorer popped to
blazefind.com saying that the SA had been succesfully removed. It was
installed under Program Files\WindowsSA, so I think some 3rd-party sh*tware
inadvertently got installed and was responsible for messing up my taskbar. I
probably should mention I also added some "use search asst = no"s to the
registry, so I no longer have that lame Explorer search dog - good riddance
to that!
Anyway, things are even better now than they were before, so I'm a happy man
again. :)
