RE: Window XP update causes conflict during system boot

I am also having similar problems. I installed the update this morning. My computer was running fine till I rebooted. Now I have problems. If I start up normally, I cannot get past the Windows XP home edition screen with the scrolling green meter. It will just sit for about a minute or so and just go to a black screen. After about 10 minutes or so, XP will do a disk check and there are very many corrupted or unreadable files detected. It will 'fix' these files. The result is that I stay on the Windows XP home edition screen a shorter amount of time before I get the black screen. I have tried starting it in safe mode but it locks up while listing all of the drivers. It never goes to desktop. Same for safe mode with networking. I have tried the option of last known good configuration and it just goes to the Windows XP home edition screen for about a minute then sits at a black screen. I attempted to boot from my CD rom with my Windows XP disk, but that didn't work either. It behaved as if I was starting Windows normally. So, I inserted my Windows 98 startup disk. (not a typo) The hope was to use some of the diagnostic tools to check the computer. I ran scandisk but no errors reported. I went back to boot from CD and XP setup started up!

Now, I can probably put a new install of XP over top the old one and I will at least have a functioning computer. But, what happened? I know 99% of users probably had no problems with this update and this is my first problem with updates. My computer was running great till I installed this update. I certainly dont want to install this update on any other computers! Any useful information will be greatly appreciated.
