If you have the Yahoo toolbar with the popup blocker it could be the
popup blocker making the sounds.

Hi Ricky,
thank you for your suggestion
I do have google pop-up blocker, but that also has the sound turned off (i
really hate computer sounds). Also it was happening before i got google
toolbar.
I come back to the only hint i have, it happens only when a browser is open
and the modem is active. Last night i realised that, as well as with
internet explorer and yahoo messenger, it happens when real player is
running and acting as a browser (but not when playing audio or video
streams. It does not happen when using my email program (outlook 2000)
The browser windows (internet explorer, yahoo messenger, real player) can be
in any combination, ie it will happen when any of them are open, singlely or
in combination, so it cannot be specific to any of the programs. The 'boink'
sound occurs often but not regularly.
In the modem properties box I can find nothing that may be the source of the
problem, i have unchecked 'enable modem speaker' but that made no
difference.
It is driving me crazy.

problem. I have finally tracked it down.
I am using a anti-malware program called pestpatrol (which i think is
rubbish compared to adaware). When it recognises a cookie, it deletes it,
and plays this annoying sound. Now i have disabled the sound, and all is
right with the world...for the moment.
It was Ricky's suggestion that got me thinking along the right line.
