Re: Install new XP over old, pirated version?

A format & fresh install would be best, to get rid of any "Nasties" that may
be lurking on an old computer, and would greatly increase performance.
Hopefully you have all the mobo drivers on CD, and any Video and Sound
driver CD's.

it. I'd like to buy full, retail version of the software, so it will be
properly licensed and I'll be able to get Service Packs, patches, etc. Must
I reformat the hard drive and completely start over or can I load the new XP
over the old somehow? Thanks!

THANK YOU FOR YOUR RESPONSE, WILLIE!,

Actually, the full version of the story is that the computer came with Windows ME. When I'd just taken it out of the box, the IT person who handles the office network said I couldn't use ME, but that he would have to install XP Pro, so I could connect to the office from the computer (a laptop) at home. He made me a copy of the disk and gave me the install code, in case I needed to reinstall later (I assumed it was some corporate license thing).

Now, a couple of years later, my computer had "little nasties," as you call them, :) and I paid the new IT guy (the old guy's gone) $200 to reformat the hard drive and get my home network linked to the office again. I used the same CD the old guy made for me, and the same code that worked before. However, now when I try to get SP1, on this fresh install, Microsoft tells me the code is probably pirated. I don't want to go through the whole reformatting process, and reinstalling all my software and settings.

Can I just buy Windows XP Pro and call Microsoft and tell them the code number? Or is there a way to overlay the new over the old XP?

Perform a repair-install, it should keep your data:

Good luck
