RE: ActiveSync |
| message from =?Utf-8?B?SmF5IFplZCBXaWxraW5zb24=?= on 9 Jun 2004 |
I've just finished struggling with a similar problem. After months of trouble-free usage, my PDA suddenly would not interface with my computer.
I get a window saying ActiveSync 'Can't recognise the device because it is either not connected properly or it's not a Pocket PC'. Well it recognised it before, so the second isn't a problem. I have connected and reconnected it and re-installed ActiveSync several times.
If I try to connect from the PDA, I get “Cannot start comms with the desktop computer. Remote Networking could not start due to critical error(Error 1).”
The Help system on XP is very good and I struggled through the various stages. The following MS Knowledgebase article may well be of interest to some who have this problem:
ARTICLE-ID: Q264693
TITLE: "Your Device Was Not Detected" Message Displayed in the Get Connected Wizard
It didn't work for me and the solution is not couched in terms related to Windows XP, so it was difficult to implement (I also have an internal USB Hub, which doesn't simplify the issue).
Finally I came to a very simple ruse which involves loading up ActiveSync, going into File/Connection Setting, unchecking Allow USB connection, close ActiveSync, reload ActiveSync, File/Connection Settings, re-check Allow USB connection, close ActiveSync, replace PDA on cradle(don't forget to remove it before you start!) and BINGO, it all works again!
The full instructions are on:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=%2fsupport%2fpocketpc%2ftshoot%2factivesync%2fUSB_Enable.asp
Hope this solves a few of your problems. I was just on the point of going out to buy a new PDA.

Yes, this does not surprise me. But it should NOT be so
complicated to get something working again that has
worked in the past. I have found that the longer (or
perhaps more frequently) I use the device after an
installation of ActiveSync, the more troubles I have. A
reinstallation of ActiveSync always got it working
again except for once.
I'm thinking that some other program in the computer is
interfering, and a new install overwrites whatever it
is. I sure wish Microsoft could get a handle on it!

I am beginning to think that the windows installer is corrupted in my XP installation. I have upgraded the hardware on my machine. Installed my XP Pro and finally gotten through all of the updates. But now whenever I try to install any programs I get the error 1355 telling me that my cab1 is corrupt. This has happen and a couple of different programs one being Office 2000 Professional. Also I find that any other program I try to install it tells me that the file is corrupt.
The only windows installer I've found has been for NT/windows 2000. Would running this program have a chance of correcting my problem?

Now one of the machines reuses to launch it in Normal Mode but will launch it in Safe Mode. Checked for Viruses and Spyware and removed some syware but no viruses. Updates are current and DSL access to internet works fine and all other applications run as well. My head is sore from beating it on this stone wall. Hi,
Check this site:
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/utils/fix_windows_xp_help.htm
Or go to Start > run and type in: helpctr -regserver or to totally
reinstall help and support, assuming you installed to C:
Make hidden folders visible (Windows Explorer > Tools > Folder
Options > View Tab) first and then go to
C:\windows\inf\pchealth.inf right-click and choose install. You will
need the XP cd and may need to know the location of the folders
Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386 and Windows\System32\dllcache.
Good luck

I use my laptop at work, at home and away from work and home whilst
travelling. It has WinXPP.
I log in under a server at work.
It seems I have 3 folders for My Documents. I have 2 folders for Outlook. I
have 2 different IE and I know this because the layout of the IE is
different...one has google on taskbar, the other doesn't.
Yet, the Outlook Express views the same folder because whether I use it at
work or at home, it is the same. When I come home, the newest emails are
downloaded and I only need to change the SMTP setting to send outward email.
Ideally, I would like to keep same folders for My Documents, Outlook and IE.
My understanding is that settings need to be changed in within each of these
programs so that they "point" to the folder that needs to be opened.
Could someone direct me to how this is done? One it is done, I will use each
these programs just as for Outlook Express.
Thanks

when I did a backup- (I copied the direcories to other drives where I had
room), and restore, I had not restored everything, and then I might have
copied directories back instead of MOVING them. The situation is I have
several groups of files spread between 3 drives, many duplicates, but I can
not assume everything is duplicated, and I want to now bring these back to
on drive in a clean directory structure, and weed out the duplicates (some
might have the same name, but NOT be a duplicate)
How can I do this?

what ppl do online or what?

I'm running WindowsXP-MediaCenterEdition on a 2.8Ghz Pentium4.
It appears that I've picked up a particularly NASTY piece of
ADWARE (may be Spyware as well). It spontaneously opens IE6
with (seemingly random) popup Ads; it apparently is in memory
after a reboot or powerup. Startup->Startup folder is empty.
I have an application (Startup Copilot) ... that provides a
neat interface to control startup apps; with that I've reduced
the official startup apps to an absolutely minimal set (in
consultation with an HP technician). Whatever ADWARE app
that's resident in memory is unaffected (still there after
every boot/reboot). FWIW, I've run the latest versions of
Ad-Aware and Spybot, which both indicate all problems removed.
There is a related anomaly (or a most amazing coincidence).
Windows Task Manager (CNTRL-ALT-DEL) no longer functions
properly. When I simultaneously press those keys, I get
a different dialog box (no Tabs), which purports to show
*NO* tasks running. There is also *NO* close-box for the
modified dialog box; with it open there is a NEW icon in
my System Tray (looks like a green grid) ... with the cursor
over that a popup purports to display CPU usage. If I right-
click that mystery SysTray icon, I can close the Task-Manager-
Replacement dialog box.
I have prospected both the Control Panel "Ad/Remove" list and
the Start->Programs list, and removed all programs I don't
recognize. Still no joy ... the pernicious ADWARE app is still
present. I've also run a full system scan using Norton A/V 2003
(up-to-date virus signatures); no virus present. Geez!!! I'm
about out of ideas; can anyone be of assistance?
If nobody is able to "zero in" on the exact infection (and how
to remove it), perhaps someone could outline the steps to
restore Windows Task Manager to original condition? FWIW,
the computer came with an OEM-version of WindowsXP, It's
(supposedly) mirrored on a partition of the hard drive, but
I'm not sure the filenames are preserved (files may also be
compressed); the HP support person was pretty *vague* when
I asked him those questions. I know ... dumb of me to not
buy a system including Microsoft operating system on discs,
but ... water under that particular bridge. ;->
TIA,
Ted Rodrick

I have been experiencing the "symptoms" of a virus lately....webpages won't load, a program I dont know keeps asking to connect to the internet, and my computer is shut down after the LSA shell crashes (similar to the blaster virus).
I've run a sasser removal tool, yet it tells me I don't have the sasser virus, or the blaster virus. I have no antivirus software at the moment (bad idea i know, but I just havent had any time to buy a new program), but I have tried running several different virus removal tools from symantec.com. I have also download the patch, but after it extracts the files the installation just disappears from my screen.
Any and all help would be appreciated, because I am clueless!

Sandra,
By no "error or warning" do you mean no message displayed? Did you check Event
Viewer (Control Panel - Administrative Tools - Event Viewer) for clues?
Make sure you don't have a cooling problem. Are all the cooling fans running,
with no airflow problem? Check fan filters too - make sure they're clean.
If not a cooling problem, I'd suspect spyware or virus infection. Norton is a
good product - but it's not perfect. And if you ran it from the install CD,
without updating signatures, definitely not perfect. You have to have
absolutely current virus signatures, or spyware signatures, for a reliable scan
- using any security product.
Be sure to start in Safe Mode with Networking.
Try these free online virus scans:
http://www.bitdefender.com/scan/license.php
http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/com/activescan_principal.htm
http://www.ravantivirus.com/scan/
http://security.symantec.com/ssc/home.asp *Should scan with current
signatures*
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/housecall/start_corp.asp
Now check for, and learn to defend against, additional carriers of infection.
Have you downloaded these programs before? Download them again, as many are
revised frequently, to keep up with the current level of malware being attempted
constantly - get the absolutely most current version of each product listed.
They're all free - and most pretty small, so they download quickly enough.
First, download LSP-Fix and WinsockXPFIx from http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm ,
and CWShredder from http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4086.html . All are
free.
Next, close all Internet Explorer and Outlook windows, then run CWShredder.
Have it fix all variants.
Now check for, and remove, spyware. Get HijackThis
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=3155 and Spybot S&D
http://www.safer-networking.org/index.php?page=download . Both free.
1) Install and run Spybot. First update it ("Search for updates"), then run a
scan ("Check for problems"). Trust Spybot, and make all recommended deletions.
2) Install and run HijackThis. Do NOT make any changes immediately. Save the
HJT Log. http://forums.spywareinfo.com/index.php?showtopic=227
3) Have your HJT log interpreted by experts at one or more of the following
forums (and post it, or a link to your forum post, here):
http://forums.net-integration.net/
http://forums.spywareinfo.com/
http://forums.tomcoyote.org/
http://www.wilderssecurity.com/
If removal of any spyware affects your ability to access the internet (some
spyware builds itself into the network software, and its removal may damage your
network), run LSP-Fix and / or WinsockXPFIx.
Cheers,
Chuck
Paranoia comes from experience - and is not necessarily a bad thing.

You want a solution once and for all?! Follow the instructions below and
your problems will be over - forever!
You will need a very firm will and to be incredibly forceful if you are to
complete 5) successfully as AOHELL are very persuasive and will offer you
n number of free months to stay with them.
1) Take the AOHELL CD
2) If you are old enough to drive, and have a licence, place it in the
middle of the drive and back over it several times.
3) If you are not old enough to drive - or don't have a licence - place
said CD in the microwave and cook on full power for a couple of minutes - it
really is fascinating, and most satisfying, to watch. If you don't have a
microwave, use your imagination - you could smash it with a hammer (just
remember CD shards are sharp) or you could recycle it.
4) Place resulting mess in the rubbish
5) Pick up the phone, call AOHELL 'Customer Service' and tell them you
wish to cancel your account.
6) Ask people for recommendations for a proper ISP.
7) Call new ISP of choice and sign up.
There! Problem solved.
Unfortunately, removing AOHELL's trojanic software will, most likely,
require a complete format and reinstall.

Hi,
"Blazefind changes the following registry-key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
"Userinit" = "C:\WINNT\system32\userinit.exe,"
in
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
"Userinit" = "C:\WINNT\system32\wsaupdater.exe,"
Used Lavasoft Adaware to get rid of the pest ----> removed blazefind
and
with it the wsaupdater.exe
==> next time i tried to logon my computer the system tries to run
wsaupdater.exe which it couldn't find ! FAILED LOGON -> LOGOFF
I first tried to find ways to change the registry from within the
recovery console but i did not succeed (ERD commander will probably
work, but since i wasn't sure that this was the problem i thought it a
little bit too expensive)...
Then i thought of this:
just copy userinit.exe as wsaupdater.exe !! It's as simple as that....
YES!! it works again... and blazefind is gone (it seems.... :-) )"
Using the recovery console employ the command
copy C:\Windows\System32\userinit.exe
C:\Windows\System32\wsaupdater.exe
(this is one line separated by a space, supposing the partition where
windows is installed is C, and supposing blazefind caused this)
Good luck

I have an HP Pavilion 504n, that came with Win XP. I used to have the option to copy pictures to CD in the My Pictures folder, but I no longer have that function. The burner was also pre-installed when I bought the computer. I have checked with HP, and they have no updated drivers for the burner. When I try to just copy the pic by clicking on copy to, then selecting the CD burner, I get an incorrect function error. I can use the RecordNow software that came pre-installed, and it works fine. I just lost the Windows burning function. Anyone know what I can do to get this function back?

How can I get folders like Control Panel to open up with the icons
everytime, instead of a list of what's in the folder. Same thing with
folders of mp3 files I have on my desktop. Whenever I open them, I get
a list of all files, with file size, dates and times, etc. All I want
is the list of the song titles. I manually change it every time I open
it, but the next time, it's back the way I don't want it. Thanks.

the exception of CTRL-ALT-DEL sequence that I use to terminate this MS

With netmeeting on NT4 you could specify the directory server to be used via the user policy.

Win2K comes with a number of .adm files, usually found in %systemroot%\inf ,

My computer crashes - just switches off - when I'm processing images. It's not all the time, so I think it's to do with the capacity of the machine, as I have several programs open, although I have 384 MB RAM. However, I would have thought it would tell me it was overloaded rather than just switch off. I think that once the machine or Microsoft did an analysis of this and said it was to do with a flaw in the video driver, but I didn't do anything about it. I now can't find anything about video driver problems in XP on Microsoft support.
Does anyone know anything about this?

My WindowsXP system (SP1) is stuck in a logoff loop. What happens is when I
reboot (with the button), it gets to 'loading your personal settings', it
then displays the background. Then it goes to the 'Logging Off' screen,
briefly flashes 'Saving Personal Settings' and 'Loading your Personal
Settings', then it goes to 'Logging Off' again. It stays in this last 3
part loop continuously.
I've tried the various Safe Modes, try last known good setting, etc, and
they all have this same problem. I've also rebooted from a WindowsXP boot
disc, but the same problem occurs.
The only thing I was doing prevously was clearing out some spyware with
Ad-Aware. Ad-Aware said it needed to reboot to clear out some last spyware
elements. That's when this problem occurred. I also had some notices that
there was a virus on the system today, but Avast allowed me to delete them.
My system is not useable. I have a recent backup, but I can't get the
system up and running to reinstall that backup.
How can I get going again? Any help is appreciated.

hy,
My mouse won't move, the sound keeps repeating itself and only a hardware reset helps. It is, as mentioned before, completly random. Otherwise I usually find a patern and can locate the problem, but here it I am clueless.
I have two harddisks and two versions of winxp: On one I have an old version of windows xp. It's the version I used before I bought a new harddisk and it's still resident on that disk. That old disk is now set as slave and it doesn't boot up at the moment. I can still boot it up, but than I have to switch the HD from slave to master and it then runs fine...no crashes... with the new HD still active as slave!
On the new harddisk, I am experiencing the problem. While the old HD is now set as slave, the new win xp crashes randomly.
The drivers are all updated, but that doesn't really matter, cause the problem emerged from the point I started using this new disk (as a master).
Now you might think that it would be a problem with the new hard disk, but when it is set as slave and the old set as master, it runs fine....
I am thinking it could be windows and not a hardware problem, because once I was bruning a cd with Wmplayer and my system crashed... and the cd kept burning and it finalised without a hitch, while I couldn't move anything.
any help would be apreciated
thanks

have no idea what caused this, and believe me, i've tried every
possible search I could think of for the past 3 hours to get it

Ideas? Please! Couldn't find anything in the registry. I tried
fiddling with MouseHoverTime (which by the way didn't exist in the

it would be for tooltips only.

A problem with what software? Dell is responsible for the software, namely
the operating system, on your machine. Did they just leave you hanging with
the explanation that it was a "problem with the software" and then refuse to
help you with that problem? Fire up Google and search for "POST Beep Codes"
and find out what the beeps mean. For example, if your system BIOS is made
by Phoenix and you are getting beeps in this order of 3 - 2 - 4 beeps, then
you have a Keyboard-Controller Test failure.

I have a P4 machine with Windows XP ProfessionalSP1 nstalled on on it.
-server.createobject(scripting.filesystemobject) in an asp page.
The asp page which was trying to run was basically aiming to upload files
to the server.
However ever since I have been experimenting with the asp page containing
the scripting command , all the folders on my hard drive have become read
only.
I am not able to reset the read only attribute of any of the folders. Even
if I unset the attribute, on rechecking i find that it is still read only.
I have checked the permissions in NTFS for all the folders.
am logging in as the administrator and am the owner of all the folders.
I have also set the permissions as "Full Control" on all the folders.
Ever since that problem, I have stopped using the ASP page.
Inspite of all this, I am still not able to unset the readonly permission to
any of the folders on my drive.
Any new folder that I create also becomes read only.
I am also unable to unset the readonly attribute of any new folder as well.
This problem is for any folder on my drive including the folders outside my
Internet publishing directory. IT is important to note that any of the files
inside the folders are not read only. Only the folders are Read-Only.
I think this problem might be related to the service pack or the version of
Windows Scripting Host. Does anyone have any idea if this problem is not
related to Scripting?.
Please help

Hi there,
I have a problem with my IntelliType 5.0 software.
I really like the IntelliType 5.0 software with my Microsoft Wireless
Optical Desktop Elite Keyboard, and have been using the software since early
January.
Other than the default settings I have some hotkeys set up as URL links and
1 as a Shortcut to a .exe file. I also have reassigned the Media key to
open a Windows Media Player 9.0 shortcut, which has commands
(/Task:MediaLibrary) that open the player in the Media Library section
(rather than the Now Playing section, which the deafult Media key settings
does). Another binding was the Web/Home key to open a shortcut that has
the rapshone command (C:\Windows\System32\rasphone -d Internet), when
pressing the Web/Home key, the computer connects to the internet via
dial-up.
The other day I bought the game Unreal Tournament 2004, upon installing I
was requested to install DirectX 9.0b, I agreed and installation finished
fine.
I then restart the computer, and found a big problem. When I pressed the
Hotkey which was binded to a shortcut that links to a .exe file, nothing
happened, no error message, no IntelliType asking to reassign the key, just
nothing. The same happened when pressing the Media key and the Web/Home
key.
So I tried rebinding another key to open a shortcut to a different .exe
file, again when pressing the key, nothing happened. I also tried
rebinding, using the Keyboard control panel, the Hotkeys/Media/Web/Home keys
to see if that would help, but again no change.
I decided that something must of conflicted with the IntelliType 5.0
software, so I did a clean install of IntelliType (deleted all IntelliType
registry entries and files and installed the version off the CD). Yet still
the problem occurs - any key binded to a shortcut to a .exe file will not
work. Yet when assigning the key directly to the .exe file (e.g.
C:\Game.exe instead of C:\Shortcut to game.lnk), the program will open up
fine. The problem is the shortcuts have commands which I need to use (such
as the Windows Media Player media library command) and the fact that a key
binded to a rasphone command will no longer work.
I have uninstalled Ut2004 to see if that caused the problem but as I
thought, it did not.
I have done many installations/uninstallations of IntelliType/IntelliPoint
5.0 (both CD versions and the non-Terminal Services dependent Web versions)
to see if that works, but alas, it doesn't. I have also tried different
drivers for the keyboard, the IntelliType drivers and Standard drivers,
again no luck there.
The problem seems to be a conflict with DirectX 9.0b, I was wondering if an
advanced user knows if DirectX 9.0b installs some keyboard
software/driver/registry entry that may conflict with IntelliType.
Thanks for reading and any help is appreciated.

Hi,
I'm currently using 3 computers for my job : a unix machine and a regular PC at my lab and a regular PC at home. Both PCs are running windows XP. I run a computer code on the unix machine to perform calculations. I sometimes work from home and log on to the unix machine to run calculations using telnet/ftp. I also routinely do the same from my PC at my lab when someone is using the unix machine.
I recently realized that the computer code I'm running on the unix machine runs 10 to 20 times faster on my home PC. Therefore, I would like to always perform these calculations on my home PC, even when I'm at my lab. To do that, I would like to connect to my home PC to run these calculations from my PC at my lab. All I need is to be able to remotely open a DOS window on my home PC to start the calculations and to access the files on my home PC. Is that possible? How can I do that? Telnet and ftp do not work... I can't get the remote desktop access built in XP to work, but I was able to use realVNC. I can't transfer files using realVNC though. Besides, I don't need to see the desktop and everything, all I need is a DOS window... Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

I am no expert but last night was on long distance trying to help a
fellow to install Mcaffee virus scan and after he deleted or at least
attempted to remove Nortons via add remove and he began getting a
messege that computer would shut down in 45 seconds and sure enough
it did. He is nothing close to having computer skills at any level so
it was next to impossible to get him to go via F8 to safe mode and
then disable system restore and then possibley go to one of the virus
checking sites or run the sasser fix which may be the problem. At the
same time he began getting a message that msn messenger needed an
update and I have no idea if it was related. At any rate he did
manage to somehow do a system restore to May 29th and then install the
Mcaffee up to the registration and then the dreaded shutdown in 45
seconds began recoccuring. Has anybody got a suggestion(s) to help us
out.

Since updating MSN Messengerto 6.2, my download manager
(Fresh Download) tries to download MTBS.EXE almost every
time a new page is opened in Explorer. How can I stop
this from happening?

computer of this problem?
Yes, Spybot did not detect anything. The file is being
downloaded from Microsoft and is used in the setup of MSN
Messenger. Whether messenger is trying to install itself
silently or the file is needed for running messsenger and
is being consistently misplaced, I cannot tell. Loading
the file again does not stop the download requests. The
requests seem to be timed as well as they can occur when
no keys are being pressed (but MS explorer open).

Hello Everyone,
I just got the Windows XP Upgrade and I will upgrade from Windows ME. After about 5-10 minutes of upgrading a window appears and says that my Nvidia G-Force MX 440 Needs Additional Files to work with Windows XP. After Windows XP finishes upgrading and after I restart my computer a black screen appears and nothing happens. That is probably because there are no drivers for WIndows XP installed, only for Windows ME. When I try to install the drivers it says that Windows XP was not detected on the computer. Does anyone have a solution?
Did anyone ever had this problem?
Thank You
Matt

The popular ZoneAlarm Pro has evolved into a one-stop total security
solution suitable for novices as well as more experienced users. Zone
Alarm Security Suite 5 enhances ZoneAlarm's existing protective
features and adds an effective antivirus module, includes built-in
security for instant messag-ing, and blocks undesirable Web sites.
