Opening Files = Program Close

Hey, I have a pretty big problem.
Whenever I try to open a file within a program, such as Photoshop or Internet Explorer, and I go up one level to the previous folder, the program just quits without any warning at all. I can't even save pictures off the internet without this happening, and it's making using Photoshop quite a task.
Can anybody help?

Do a disk clean-up. The Internet issue can be solved usually by clearing your cache,
in IE, tools, Internet Options, delete files.
