Open file dialogue - change directories VERY slow |

In Word or Excel, when I need to change directory to find the file I want to open, it always gets stuck with the in-progress icon (walking dinosaur) for ages and ages as soon as I click on the down-arrow; it doesn't even get as far as dropping down the box... How can I fix this?

In other words: Remove CDs/DVDs from drives; Disconnect mapped (network) drives, external hard drives; Card readers; Any other peripherals that you see while browsing slow menus. Try to isolate the source of the problem. See if it helps...
If dropdown is slow, try using buttons on the left (My Computer, Desktop, etc.)
