Odd Problem

Whenever my Windows XP PC sits idle for an undetermined period of time, I have a problem starting programs. For instance, Microsoft Money 2002 will display the EULA agreement like it has just been installed. If I click "I Agree", I get an error about Internet Explorer not being installed. I have discovered that if I reboot, the system works normally. Other programs display different reasons for not starting, but the end result is the same. The programs will not start without a system restart.

This installation of XP has been around since the OS launched (and yes, I've installed every patch Bill has released). I do not relish the thought of a reload, but I'm beginning to run out of ideas. So far, I have tried running SpyBot, AdAware, Registry Mechanic, and other detection packages to no avail. I get the standard array of spyware that one normally encounters, but nothing out of the ordinary. I'm running Norton Antivirus and that doesn't detect any known infections. I have been extraordinarily careful with this system in an effort to keep it pristine, so it is very frustrating to come to this pass. If anyone has ANY input on what could be causing this, I'd be eternally grateful.

Thanks.
