New desktop.ini in Start menu - Why? |
| message from R on 10 Jun 2004 |
A couple days ago, a new desktop.ini file appeared in my start menu -
C:\Documents and Settings\[myname]\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\desktop.ini
The contents of this file was -
[.ShellClassInfo]
LocalizedResourceName=@%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll,-21787
At any startup, a notepad window opens first, with the text of the contents
in it. Nothing else different seemed to happen.
Anyone know what this is, what it does, and what it's doing there? I didn't
knowlingly put it there & haven't done anything in the last couple days that
should have put it there. My weekly virus check last Sunday was clean. In
the meantime, I put a .temp extension on the file and moved it to another,
safe location.
Thanks

Thanks. I'll delete it, as the article says. Do you know what the file
does (is it harmful?) & how it got there?

Not harmful. This text file stores the folder customization settings.
