Installing XP

Since the internal CDR of my laptop was broken, and I had tried many time to try to install XP using my new external USB CDR. But I got the error message like "the boot record could not be found on the USD CDR". I think the XP installation disk should be ok, since I bought it from the univerisity. Can anyone tell me how to fix the problem? Thanks so much.

The BIOS of your laptop must support booting from an external usb cd. Check
to see if it does. If it doesn't, you're screwed. Get the laptop repaired
or buy a new laptop.

I have already changed the 1st boot device to USB CDR in the BIOS. But still it could not find the boot record. Also, one more question, actually some IT people from my univsersity told me that WinXP can only be installed using internal CDR, is that correct? If not, is there any external CDR failed to do that? Please advise and thanks so much.
