How to Share HP Printer between NT4 and XP Pro? |
| message from Barry Higginbottom on 6 Jun 2004 |
Hi
A pal of mine has a small NT4 Workstation network of 4 machines with a
shared HP Inkjet Printer.
He has bought a new XP Pro laptop which he plugs into the network to share
files, but he cannot connect to the network printer.
He can plug the printer directly to the laptop but its a pain having to
keep swapping the printer lead from the desktop machine to the laptop!
I tried installing the shared printer for him but his laptop complains that
the installed printer driver is not for XP so it won't install it.
I've looked on the HP web site for a more modern driver but that just
informs me that XP drivers are supplied by Microsoft as part of XP.
Can this conundrum be solved?

1. Open XP's "Help and Support Center".
2. In the Search box type: PRINTER SHARING , and hit enter.
3. Several topics will appear that should be helpful.

Yes, indeed some interesting information, but nothing that helps me
specifically unfortunately.
It seems to me that if I wnated to connect a Windows NT4 machine to a
shared XP printer that would be relatively straightforward.
My problem is connecting a Windows XP machine to a shared NT4 printer.
Windows XP Pro doesn't seem to like that...
