History Tree for Website Access |

We have DSL on a HP computer and are running Microsoft XP. My daughter left instant messaging on while we were out of the house. Can a virus cause the computer to access websites without human interaction? When we checked our history tree there were technical websites accessed when no one was home? Is that possible?

might be possible, there has been stuff about vulnerabilities in messaging programs, also there's issues with iexplore, it is possible that if your not firewalled someone could hack in and then use your computer as either a relay for spam or virus's.
not sure, i would update computer with latest patches and get a firewall installed, good one is black ice my old company used them, good av is sophos.
