Sounds like line from a bad song! My wife uses this more than I do, and she reminded me I needed to update the system 3 days ago.She tried, I TRIED!!! All we can get from microsoft is a big ol window that says "Thank you for your interest in microsoft products. You have to be running our product to use this service(or close to that). I've been using XP forever! I cannot get around this. She tried to upgrade adobe reader and couldn't install because microsoft kept running interference;she got caught in a loop and finally jumped out 'the ugly way'. Someone suggested returning all security, cookies etc. to default. So We Did. Yes we restarted the machine. Same ol Same ol. HELP I have no more ideas. She has no more ideas. Gotta be something simple?XP home edition--Emachine T2625

Greetings,

Does your web browser (IE) work?
i.e. can you browse other sites?

What sort of connection is it? Modem? Broadband?

Did it work before?
What changed?

Greetings,

Hmmm,
I would suggest a re-install of IE6 from here -
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=1e1550cb-5e5d-48f5-b02b-20b602228de6&DisplayLang=en

It would also be a good idea to download and run Spyware removers -
(AdAware, SpyBot Search and Destroy, Spyware Blaster 3)

browse anywhere, including microsoft, just can't get anything from them.We
use a midrange DSL, which has been working ok.I CANNOT think of Anything
that changed! Haven't done anything new. Didn't know this was going on until
I reminded my husband of the need to check for updates because I hadn't seen
any update reminders come up. That is something I watch for. I started using
this puter more because my laptop's cpu fan went out and is shipped away,
and I used the same system, browser, dsl,,oh! and we are wireless here also.
But nothing new has happened except a new 'driver' (ME). Maybe it's like a
car and hates to be driven by unfamiliar people? Sorry, silly has set into
grandmas brain at this point. Just totally stumped. gremlins.

Quentin,

You *cannot* reinstall IE6 by downloading. It must be reinstalled from the
XP CD.

Do a System Restore to a date/time before the problems started and try
WindowsUpdate again. If System Restore works you will have lost anything
installed from that date/time forward.

Look for "When attempting to access the Windows Update Web site you
receive the following message: Thank You -- you must be running a
Microsoft windows operating system in order to use windows update"

Otherwise follow the windows Update Checklist:

Aha,

In short, Gramps and Gran,
it appears you have a firewall installed
as well as XP firewall enabled

Only 1 is required...

Greetings,

Yes,
Norton's Internet Security is a Firewall.

You can turn the basic XP firewall OFF as follows -

START / Settings / Connect To / Open all connections,
Right click on the connection to your ADSL modem (e.g Local Area
Connection),
click Properties / Advanced
Switch Firewall OFF...

Then do the tip Jupiter mentioned...

That should do it.

protection, and it is kept updated. Does that count? I don't have a problem
running those others you mentioned though if you feel I need to. How would
an extra firewall just pop in? I'd like to AVOID that happening again. I can
also reinstall Internet Explorer if necessary. Right now I'm just trying to
figure out where to start with all of this great information we have been
given!! Since it is 1am here now it might be smart to wait until tomorrow.
Does anyone know which of all these 'advices' I should start with. I am
overwhelmed at all of the kind, and fast responses. Thanks EVERYONE again.
I'll be back!:)
