Help - Error 5: Access is denied ; Remote Access Mngr and SP1 |
| message from Harvey Rothenberg on 3 Jun 2004 |
I am looking for assistance with a situation that has occurred due to a
College's tech Support instance on my daughter to run their update CD that
included SP1 last September. They did not inform my daughter that this
Service Pack was included on their supplied CD, and thus I had executed
XP's Recovery because their standard virus checker was not the install
program for her laptop. So there was a conflict between softwares.
After finishing her recovery while at home we tried to use Dial-up
networking. We experienced the following error message even as
Administrator :
Could not start the Remote Access Connection Manager service on Local
Computer.
Error 5: Access is denied
When she returned to campus, her direct Ethernet connection worked with no
problems. So during the school year she was fine. I initially tried to
download the SP1 again while she was connected to the school network, but
"SP1a" was the only Pack available. This was downloaded and then tried for
Dial-up. We still received the same message.
From the results, I believe that XP is still looking for a one-to-one
replacement because it is not intelligent enough to know that SP1a was the
most recent update.
I had checked the Microsoft's - KB and found the following article #
329441 - "You Cannot Create a Network Connection After You Restore Windows
XP", and it say the corrective action is to " reinstall SP1 for Windows
XP."
As I have indicated, I have tried this and experienced the same results.
Can anyone tell me what they have done when faced with this experience ?
Should I still go through with the suggested "workaround" even though SP1a
is installed ?
I look forward to your suggestions.
Thanks! Ahead of time.
