File summary metadata in WinXP

Dear all,

1. Is there any way 'custom' and 'summary' information specified for files on the XP platform can be used by normal users when performing file searches? This would potentionally be a valuable tool to use for files that are shared.
2. Does anyone know of good sources of (non-expert) info on this functionality?
