FTP:connect problem - FTP does not work?? |

Have a wierd one here - when I try to download AVG updates or invoke IDM
(Internet Download Manager) they keep failing.
Upon further inspection I tried to manually invoke FTP from the command line
and I get this <bad, incorrect> response:
C:\>ftp
ftp: connect
C:\>
...instead of something like this (from another Win2000 system on the same
network):
C:\>ftp
ftp>quit
C:\>
What is the problem? is my FTP executable under C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32
corrupt or ?
The crazy thing is that pinging remote systems works fine and IE can download
things correctly.
HELP!
