File Sharing on Home Network WITHOUT TCP/IP |
| message from Paul on 7 Jun 2004 |
Hi
I recently did all the modifications to Unbind the TCP/IP protocol from
"Client for MS networks" & "File & print sharing for MS networks" so as to
improve my security, problem is, i was unable to see or use another computer
on my network so i had to undo it all to enable me to use it. I want to
unbind the TCP/IP protocol again but need access to my other computer... I
followed someone's post to get the how to for XP, but it didn't address this
situation.
Nb. I am running an XP HOME machine which uses a 4 port router (Alcatel-
Speed Touch Pro), and am decently literate. Oh, the other machine is an XP
PRO...
I have no doubt that there's an answer out there, that's why I'm here, if
anyone could help that'd be great thanks...
Paul
PS. Here is the post I followed till now:
Unbinding "Client for MS networks" & "File & print sharing for MS networks"
in XP.
The first thing you need to do is to get your XP system disk and copy the
following two files to your HD.
change to d:\Valueadd\MSFT\Net\Netbeui\
* copy nbf.sys into the %SYSTEMROOT%\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ directory
* copy netnbf.inf into the %SYSTEMROOT%\INF\ directory
In most cases systemroot is c:\windows
reboot
single left-click on the following folders:
Start>Control Panel>Network & Internet Connections>network connection
then right-click on the LAN connection Icon and select properties.
Under the General tab in the window "This connection uses the following
items" you will have "Internet protocol TCP/IP" listed with a check mark and
will not have "NetBEUI protocol" listed. You should also have "Client for
MS networks" and "File & print sharing for MS networks" listed and checked.
(assuming you have installed the LAN for that is the reason for this
exercise)
Now click the Install box and select protocol and click on add. "NetBEUI
protocol" should appear. Highlight "NetBEUI protocol" and click the OK box.
reboot
single left-click on the following folders:
Start>Control Panel>Network & Internet Connections>network connection
then right-click on the LAN connection Icon and select properties.
"NetBEUI protocol" should be listed and be checked. Now in the "Network
Connection" folder click on "advanced" in the menu bar and select "advanced
settings", the bindings for "Client for MS networks" and "File & print
sharing for MS networks" should appear with boxes for both "NetBEUI" and
"TCP/IP" listed under each and checked. Uncheck the two TCP/IP boxes and
select the "OK" box.
In the LAN connection properties box the checked boxes for "Client for MS
networks" and "File & print sharing for MS networks" should now have a gray
background but still be checked.
You should be done but you might want to reboot again. The internet will
still be accessed with theTCP/IP protocol and the LAN will use NetBEUI for
its sharing.
