Explorer bar on Desktop

Hi
I have no idea what I have done, but on my desktop I have a bar running down the side with the standard explorer >Folder Tasks, Other Places, Details. And to make matter worse if I click on my explorer shortcut on the desktop, the hour glass comes up and nothing happens. Now I know the desktop runs on the explorer "engine" but I cannot find anywhere to change this setting.
Can anybody help?

Go to Kelly's site:

and scroll down to line 15, left column 'Remove common tasks from the
desktop'
