Erasing memory from USB card reader

I have been successfully using a USB card reader to download pics from my digital camera using XP operating software. Now, for some reason the card reader is retaining the pictures from the card (even after I've reformatted the card & used a new card). The old pictures are still displayed even when I insert a blank card. HELP!!
