Device\CdRom0, has a bad block

message from Becky on 12 Jun 2004
Please help....a couple of months ago my cd/dvd drive started acting up.
I have a laptop, HP Pavilion ze5170. The drive is a QSI DVD/CDRW
SBW-081. It worked perfectly fine, then we installed a game, I shut
down ok, but the next time I booted my system went to safe mode. I
uninstalled that game and a couple of others that we weren't using.
I've tried many things, not much help. I've done a firmware upgrade,
patches, etc. I've contacted HP for assistance, they adviced a patch
plus uninstalling the drive and letting my system reinstall, and
resetting BIOS. Sometimes, the drive just spins and spins. Other
times, the only sound is the "eye" moving back and forth. Uninstalling
per HP's advice, killed the drive entirely, but when I installed the
patch they suggested, I was able to get DVD's and music CD's to work.
Data CD's are what I cannot get to work now--again, either they just
spin and spin, or nothing but the "eye" moves. Going into the event
viewer is where I see the error in my subject above. HP is suggesting
a reinstall of XP, which I'm trying to avoid so I don't have to try and
backup my system first---little hard to do if the CD isn't working.
Been searching the internet several times for answers, found this error
in several discussion threads, but don't seem to find any answers. The
CD's I'm trying to load have been cleaned and work perfectly fine on
every other computer I've tried, laptops and desktops. Also, I've
tried CD's that I've previously loaded on my laptop, and those either
spin or do nothing.
Thoughts??????? Thanks!
