Crashing, and the such |
| message from =?Utf-8?B?ZW9qMTc=?= on 12 Jun 2004 |
I've noticed some problems on my computer, first, frequently when I boot up some games, such as Knights of the Old Republic, it'll crash Windows explorer. Also, after about 8-12 hours my computer will just lock up. Maybe that's overheating? One last thing, if I double click on a video file, mpeg, avi, whatever, Media Player won't play it, it'll give me the hourglass icon for a few moments, and then nothing will happen, I have to right click and go to Play to get it to work. Any ideas?

Check the Event Log.
Turn off the automatic reboot on error.
Upgrade your video/sound card drivers.
Make sure the machine is patched.
Make sure it is virus free.
Make sure it is spyware free.
Details:
Look through your event log for any and all errors:

Windows XP lets you specify how the OS handles critical errors. To change
this setting, select Start > Control Panel > Settings > System (in the
Classic-style Start menu, Control Panel is under Settings). Click Advanced >
System And Recovery > Settings. In the System Failure section, clear the
Automatically Restart check box, then click OK. While you're here, it's a
good idea to shut off XP's irritating habit of asking whether you want to
report every petty error to Microsoft. Click the Error Reporting button near
the bottom right and check Disable Error Reporting. However, check the box
next to "But notify me when critical errors occur." Click OK here and in the
next dialog.
