Can't play mid, wav, etc.

My PC won't play mid, wav files. Using XP Home.

It does play CD's and system sounds.

I have tried Windows Media Player and RealPlayer, same thing.

I noticed in Media Player that the "Speaker" is not listed under devices but
can't figure out how to add it.

Can someone please tell me where the problem might be?
