Connect Network Registry |
| message from =?Utf-8?B?Um9iZXJ0?= on 3 Jun 2004 |
I'm having trouble accessing the registries of my Windows XP Pro machines using regedit's Connect Network Registry. I can connect to the machines, but receive a "Cannot open HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE: Error while opening key" when trying to open the key.
1. I'm running the program on the remote computer as a domain admin.
2. Remote Registry Service is started and is set to Automatic.
3. I can connect to remote registries on all of my Windows 2000 workstations.
4. Network consists of only 1 domain. No policies have been set to prevent this.
Please help!

Yes, it happens on all other XP machines. Our domain consists of >90% Windows 2000 Pro Workstations with the remainder XP Pro.

Hi Robert,
I know this sounds stupid and you've probably covered it but, unless the user is a member of the Administrator's local group or the Domain Admin's group, you cannot edit a remote Registry.
I'm also presuming that you've added all the XP machines to your Domain.
Can you log onto their admin share's \\computer_name\c$?
Thanks
Lavan

Yes. All of the workstations of the domain have the Domain Admins group as part of the local Admins' group setup as a policy. I can also connect to the admin$ and c$ administrative shares.
Thanks.
