CHKDSK Runs On Start-up |
| message from BRP on 10 Jun 2004 |
Everytime I start the PC, Chkdsk runs at bootup.
Have allowed it to run but still insists on doing it.
Tried Chkdsk from the recovery console...no good.
Can't run Defragment as it say that Chkdsk is requested
to run on the drive, (CHKDSK /F). Nothing is scheduled.
Virus....or is it time to reinstall XP.
Thanks for any assistance.

Tried the Disable option and this has stopped the Chkdsk at start-up.
There is however the problem of not being able to Defragment due to
the Chkdsk /F scheduled to run on the C: Drive. Which goes back to
the original problem. When Chkdsk is run there is no errors, even from
the XP recovery console....what is the /F switch option anyway?
Double checked the start-up options and there's nothing scheduled.
I only have Zonealarm 4.5 installed(been working Ok.)
Appreciate your help guys.

Start | Run | Type: cmd | OK |
Type: chkdsk /? | ENTER
/F Fixes errors on the disk.
To run Chkdsk from My Computer or Windows Explorer
1.In My Computer or Windows Explorer, right-click the volume you want to
check, and then click Properties.
2.On the Tools tab, click Check Now.
3.Do one of the following:
oTo run Chkdsk in read-only mode, click Start.
oTo repair errors without scanning the volume for bad sectors, select the
Automatically fix file system errors check box, and then click Start.
oTo repair errors, locate bad sectors, and recover readable information,
select the Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors check box, and then
click Start.
You can run Chkdsk in two modes:
•Chkdsk without parameters. When you run Chkdsk without parameters, it runs
in read-only mode. In this mode, Chkdsk examines the disk and then reports
whether it found any file system errors but does not repair the errors.
•Chkdsk with parameters. When you run Chkdsk with parameters, such as /f or
/r, Chkdsk repairs errors related to file system structures.

A lot of info Wes thanks. Unfortunatly I tried most of it but still no good.
One error did flag up with a problem with the system files. /I switch.
Still can't Defragment drive because of the scheduled Chkdsk /F.
Thinks it's time for a Repair install and see what comes of that.
Thanks for all the help.

Richard,
Have done a search on CHKDSK but only finds my original message.
Seem to have only a limited number to search from. Can't look back
any further than a few days.
I hope the message your referring to has the answer I'm looking for.
Thanks again.

runs does it actually complete the process or is there a message that it was
unable to complete. If unable to complete there is a high probability that
you have the latest version 5 of Zone Alarm on board and this is known to
cause CHKDSK problems on XP systems. The solution most followed at the
moment is to uninstall ZA5 and reinstall the previous version 4.5. Full
details of how to proceed can be found on the ZA FAQs and message boards.
If the above is not the case make sure that your computer is not scheduled
to run CHKDSK as a start up task.
Richard.
