Accessing help crashes programs |
| message from =?Utf-8?B?SGVkbGV5?= on 7 Jun 2004 |
Attempting to access HTML Help files for ANY application via the Help menu causes the the following message to appear: "Microsoft® HTML Help Executable has encountered a problem". Frequently, the application crashes after displaying a "ThisCrapApp has encountered a problem" message. Double-clicking on the relevant *.CHM file also causes help to crash with the "Microsoft® HTML Help Executable has encountered a problem" message. If I search for a topic in Microsoft Help and Support Center and then click a link in the Search Results pane, I again get "Microsoft Help and Support Center has encountered a problem".
Searching Microsoft's web site only returned one hit relating to help crashing in the Scribble application, part of Visual Studio .NET, which was caused by the # (hash) character being in a filepath. This cause does not apply to my situation.
I have religiously applied all Windows XP Pro updates recommended by Windows Update and conjecture that an updated file is causing Microsoft HTML Help to crash. (I just checked and Windows Update advises that there are no outstanding updates.) I have also tried Hhupd.exe without success as I get a message saying that updates can only be applied by Windows Update.
Can you please advise whence I can download a fix and apply it? Incidentally, if you search with Google ("HTML Help has encountered a problem" or "HTML Help Executable has encountered a problem"), you will find others who have had this experience.
