Service Pack 8

message from =?Utf-8?B?Qm9i?= on 6 May 2004
I just got Access 2003 and it says I need to install SP 8. Fine - I try to install with open - it seems to work but it doesn't. I download, turn everything off (virus protect etc) and the same thing happens.

Please tell me what I am doing wrong.

Thank you.

Access 2003 is already on SP8 ?

I wonder what Access 97 is on ?

That would be SP8 for Jet 4.0, not for Access itself.

Access 97 would be using Jet 3.51, so it's really not comparable.

Jim - I was referencing Jet 4 Service Pack 8

You may be confusing Jet service packs with Access/Office service packs.

Access 2000, 2002, and 2003 use the Jet Database Engine version 4.0.
The latest service pack for Jet 4.0 is Service Pack 8.

Access 97, however, uses Jet 3.50 (3.51).
The latest service pack for Jet 3.51 is Service Pack 3.
You can find the info and download here:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;172733

Keep in mind these are different than Access/Office service packs.

The latest service pack for Access 97 is Service Release 2A I believe.
The latest service pack for Access/Office 2000 is Service Pack 3.
The latest service pack for Access/Office 2002 (XP) is Service Pack 3.
No service packs for Access/Office 2003 have been released yet (I think).
I could be mistaken on the last one.

You can find all this information on Microsoft's site.

The easiest way to install it will probably be by going to

http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com

It is one of the updates available here and should install itself.

Wayne -

I did that - and then I tried saving on my PC and doing the install.

When I check HELP/About/System Info/Office/Access/Jet Core Components and look at the description for Jet 4.0 it says Not Available

I just got my PC from DELL - did they neglect to install something? Can i get this from the CD they gave me?

Any help is greatly appreciated - I'll eMail you a MGD if you have a solution. :-)

There is a different install package for each OS, did you get the correct
one? There isn't one for WinME, but since you're running Access 2003 you
shouldn't be using WinME or Win95 (there is one for Win98). Also, will
Windows Update auto install it (don't save it and install it, just let WU do
it for you). What is your OS? If it is WinXP, most new computers now come
with WinXP SP1 installed, but you'll find that Windows Update still has
about 60 MB of patches. I recommend installing them. Some of them are what
you need to avoid things such as the Sasser virus that is going around at
the moment.

I went to HELP/About/System Info/Office/Access/Jet Core Components on my
computer (WinXP SP1, Office 2003) and the only thing I have listed are Jet
3.51 files, nothing for Jet 4.0. Win2k, XP, and 2003 have Jet 4 installed by
the OS, so it should be there and if it wasn't then the Office install
should have installed it.

FWIW a security patch out recently updates msjet40.dll and others.

MS04-014: Vulnerability in the Microsoft Jet Database Engine could
permit code execution - 837001
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=837001 Note that while
this updates Jet 4.0 this does not have a Jet SP version number.

For more info on these and other updates see
