RAM Memory Used by MS Access

message from fred on 27 May 2004
Our organization in planning on purchasing a server for
all the MS Access applications. How much RAM Memory does
a single MS Access application use. The second related
question is...does each MS Application executing use up
their own RAM Memory? In other words the number of MS
Access applications running needs the cumulative amount of
RAM Memory used by each application?

Modern computers use virtual memory, but typically (and Access is certainly
typical in this regard) benefit from more _real_ memory. You can safely
ignore the minimum memory requirements printed on the Access box -- you'll
need no less than two-to-four times that much.

I'm considering a new computer now, with Access being the primary
application (as I am an Access developer), and looking at nothing that I
can't immediately upgrade to at least 1 GB RAM. You may be able to get by
with less... the vintage-2000 notebook I am using now has 384MB* RAM and a
700 MHz processor (but it is the one I am looking to replace). It works OK,
but the apps I run on it are under development, using a small set of
development/test data, not production volumes.

* the max it will physically handle

"As much as you can possibly afford" is about the right amount.
