Microsoft Jet 4.0 Service Pack 8 |

When I open Microsoft Office Access 2003 I am recommended to update to
Microsoft Jet 4.0 Service Pack 8. According to
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;829558 in Service
Pack 8 Msjet40.dll's version is 4.0.8015.0. The Msjet40.dll I find on my
computer is version 4.00.8618.0.
What does that mean? My Msjet40.dll is more recent than the one in Service
Pack 8? Do I have to upgrade (or downgrade) to Service Pack 8? I don't know
why my version is higher than the one in Service Pack 8? (I use Windows XP
Pro.)

I did some checking and I show 4.00.8618.0 to be the version on Windows 2003
Server (at least on the SBS version of the server). When I check my Windows
Update installation history, I show that I did apply Jet 4 SP8. I also
checked the service pack for Windows 2003 and the file version in the
service pack is 4.0.8015.0. So, I'm guessing that there are files in the
service pack other than Msjet40.dll that need to be updated but that the
service pack is smart enough to not overwrite the newer Msjet40.dll.

Microsoft are probably using their MSI technology properly as Wayne outlines
here. Am I right in assuming that MSI's can keep track of their DLLs and not
overwrite newer or different ones?

Most of the patches I've applied recently, that is the case. They don't
overwrite new files, at least not without prompting you first.

8618 was included in a recent critical update for Windows, released after
JET 4 SP8.
You already have the latest version of JET 4, probably because you used
Windows Update to stay up to date with your critical patches.

You are right: I use Windows Update. And after installing Service Pack 8 my
Msjet40.dll still has version number 4.00.8618.0. So installing Service Pack
8 does not overwrite newer DLLs.
However I wonder why Access 2003 recommends me to install Service Pack 8
when I open a database. I get a security warning because of unsecure
expressions (although I don't use any macros and VBA in that database). If I
choose not to block them Access 2003 tells me that Service Pack 8 or higher
should be installed?

Like Wayne wrote previously, there may be other files that were updated with
JET SP8 besides MSJET40.dll.

Yes, probably. But I still get a security warning which recommends me to
upgrade to SP 8 despite using the most recent JET version.
