search engine indexing

message from A.H.O. on 16 Jul 2004
Ive heard that a search engine doenst use meta much anymore but instead uses
content. My home page doesnt have a whole lot of text in it. Will the search
engines read or index or whatever you call it the alt="" in the page?

I think Im using the term alt="" right? Isnt that what makes the "pop up
text" that comes up when you scroll over an object with your mouse?

Thanks

Anyone have any idea, or should I look elsewhere?

Someone in this forum suggested (I can't remember who) this web site. It would be a good place to start.

Wait - you got an answer, no? To reiterate.

SE's will read alt attribute contents. They will also read title attribute
contents. But if there is no *content* on the page, I don't think that you
will get a good ranking in any event.

You can use keywords in the alt attribute, the title attribute and links. I
use them in acronyms and abbreviations as well but I don't really know about
the value of this.

With regard to the alt attribute, this is used to give an image a textual
alternative to screen readers and other assistive technology but also
appears, as you noted, as a "tool tip" type of visual aid.

The "tool tip" displaying ALT text is an IE only anomaly. No other
browser displays it.
