img heavy pages

message from A.H.O. on 25 Jul 2004
Hey again everyone,

Ive got a couple of pages that Im wanting to put short animation gifs on,
along with several other pictures. Ive reduced the file size of the animations
as much as possible (while still keeping the properties I want) but the page is
still WAY heavy! 1100KBs heavy. 90% of that is in the animation. Is there a
way to make sure that the animation loads last so it just sort of pops up when
its done while the viewer can see the rest of the page not knowing it is stil
loading? I know the browser will still show a loading status. But Id like to
display the page as normal while the animation loads.

Thoughts?

There's no free lunch. Animated GIF images with lots of frames are HEAVY.
And 900K of animated GIFS is wayyyy TOO MUCH! Do you REALLY need the
animated GIFs? Why?
