what's the score with doctypes?
http://www.alistapart.com/articles/doctype/ and used what they recommended
but still got the same result. i then searched and found a lot of people
saying that you don't actually need them and some people saying that they
can even have an adverse effect on the way the site is displayed.
it's all a bit confusing! should i be using a doctype? if so, will it stuff
everything up if i use the wrong one? will i have problems if i don't?

I would recommend using Doc Types, it informs the Browser what type of html etc
you are using and saves the browser from having to try and decide itself, such
as IE does, and of course we all know how badly IE deals with most things.
