disjointed rollover HELP?!

Hello All
I need a really good tutorial or soemthing about disjointed rollovers. The
site I am building for a client had a slideshow that javascript wise wasn't
working so now I would like to do a disjointed rollover - I know it has
somehting to do with replacing a transparent gif - can anyone point me in the
right direction?
