Update and post website |
| message from Jon02ski on 19 Jul 2004 |
So I FTPed our existing site into Dreamweaver MX 2004. I'm new to DW, so this
is probably rather elementarty. Sorry! Anyway, once I've updated all the
pages with the most current information, what do I do? Do i have to copy the
contents into an actual Web folder (because I only have what I received via
FTP). If so, do I grab ALL the contents and do that, or just certain
directories?
Next, I need to know how to post the website. I'm very famiilliar with
FrontPage, but this is all new to me. If someone could give me good
instructions, I would be forever greatful. I'm way past my deadline of getting
the site updated. Thanks!

When you work with DW, you are working with local files. You make changes
to your local files by making your edits, and then you upload these changed
files to your remote site's location.
It's very simple to use DW's EDIT | Select Recently Modified Files, and then
press the PUT button.

Thanks. I'm still not sure what to do with the files I've imported. They're
NOT in a local folder. So, I'm assuming I have to copy and paste them in. But
which files? I don't need all the files "the site's control panel, mail
program, etc. There were several directories. One was "public html" another
was 'www'. Which files do I copy? Please advise clearly. Thanks!

You are editing files without having defined a local site?

1. Define a site (that means specify a local site on your hard drive, and a
remote site with its associated FTP data).
2. Connect to the site and GET your files (this brings them from the root
folder of the remote site to the root folder of the local site)
3. Make your edits to the local files.
4. Upload the edited files to the remote site.
Any other sequence will not produce desirable results.
