Sanity Check with Development Pricing - OT

message from Kevin Davis on 21 Jul 2004
I just did a quote for 100 item ecommerce site, which looks like it would
run about $2000 or so, all custom design. The potential client came back
saying that he found another company that will do it for $700, complete.

Does that sound right to you guys?

No. It sounds insane. Your quote sounds insane to me too, frankly.

Thanks Seth, that's what I figured, they might be outsourcing or have other
scripted methods of creating, vs. custom hand coded stuff.

Murray - reading through google old posts, I realize this isn't the right
place to post this too. I have posted here lots in the past on DW stuff, but
will find a more appropriate place for this.

If you really do just think I'm nuts, what would you charge for a custom
ecommerce site using paypal (client request) for 100 items and 10-12 pages
of content?

Ah...paypal? So it's not really an ecommerce site. Sounds like more of a
static site where you're just setting up the paypal items?

If so, that makes a bit more sense.

In the end, though, it's an impossible question to answer. There are simply
WAY to many variables to take into account (region, expertise, cost of
living, competition, other details of project, who's writing content, is
there current branding standards, etc, etc, etc...)

Oops - I missed the paypal thing competely too! That would considerably
impact my pricing to be more in the range of the one KD quoted.

You sounded real cheap at 2K.

The other guy sounds like outsourced Indian labour.

Your client seems like a cheap pain in the ass that you should walk away
from.

Depends on the circumstances. Perhaps the company already has a custom built
script for e-commerce solutions. Then they only need to adapt to your
products.
