I have not opened a trouble ticket (it appears it would cost $99 to
troubleshoot this). Since I have found others on this forum with the same
problem, I was hoping one of them might have found the solution by now. Thanks.

You are entitled to two free 1:1 support incidents, provided that they are
used within 90 days of each other. You can use the first of these at any
time after your purchase of the product.
It's a very low frequency post. Most of them have been solved by the steps
you have mentioned.

I decided to do the F10 trick to leave the code inspector open. I closed the code inspector and now split view works again. Go figure.
