Re: Navbar Down Buttons w Template |
| message from marywithani on 22 Jul 2004 |
Thanks so much - I have to sit a bit and digest this... the template solution
seems a bit cumbersome - can't I construct my own navbar in my template, in an
editable region, then just go into each page and make it so the correct down
image shows initially on each page? I understand this could be a bit of a pain
if I need to make a change to my navbar, but it seems like a simpler solution.
Only - I know where the "show down initially" is on the DW navbar creator, but
I'm not sure how I would do it constructing my own - I could swap the down
image and actually make it the up image for each corresponding page... ?? It
just sounds messy to create multiple litttle template regions on top of each
other...

Of course. But then by putting it in an editable region to allow this, you
have sacrificed your reason for using templates in the first place - sorta
like throwing the baby out with the washwater, you know? If you do this,
you will then have to manually change any links on all pages. Geddit?
That's how.
You'll get over it when you see how nicely it works. An additional
advantage of this method is that when the down button is 'up', it can have
no link. You achieve all of this by setting a single parameter on each
child page.

I know it started to sound like the baby/bathwater thing... I think, though,
what you're saying is I can use the same template, change it for each page
using Optional regions, and still be able to make changes to the base template
and have them pull through to the children.
<i>"Each button would be placed on the Template page in *both* up and down
states, giving this arrangement -
button1up button1down button2up button2down...."</i>
OK - I'm confused. Am I applying a whole Optional region that's as big as my
whole navbar, or do I create an optional region for each up and each down
button? Am I actually supposed to drop the buttons into the table next to each
other, so my navbar looks twice as wide on the template? Is it that, because
only one of each is going to be visible, they will scrunch together as they
should?
Also, I'm assuming this means that I'm going to have to reconstruct the pages
I've already made, once I have this navbar thing under control, since I don't
think I can apply a new template to the same page, right?

Yes.
Yes. 4 buttons = 8 optional regions.
Yes. I usually do such stuff *AFTER* I have all the layout issues resolved.
Yes'm.
I would never apply a template to a page with existing content. It's always
best to spawn a new child, copy and paste content, and then overwrite the
old with the new page.
Yep. You can leave the rollovers there since you will be rolling the down
with the down....

When it works, it's like magic. Really! 8)
I'm glad it came through for you.

And... Does this mean I only need to actually put a page link on the UP buttons?
