Just curious, but does it throw the same monkey wrench with a user of a
more modern browser increases the text size in the browser?

No, no, no!

The H1 tag has a purpose. It defines a HEADER. This is structural markup and
should be preserved in the browser. CSS is the STYLE, and then comes second
to the structure. So, leave the H1, and don't worry about a small layout
glitch for those with older browsers.
