Root folder issues

message from neophyte weaver on 24 Jul 2004
I made a site and uploaded it to a domain and it was groovy. I wanted to upload
the same site to a new domain and that's when my problems began. I went to
"manage sites" and in order get to the FTP part of the site set-up to change
the FTP address for my old site I had to make a new site name which made a new
root folder. My old site folder is now in a new site root folder and my
index.htm file is in the old site folder. I want to make my old site folder
into my root folder again, or create a new site from scratch and copy all my
old site files into a new root folder without having a folder within a root
folder. How do I accomplish that seemingly impossible task? Or how do I get
around the problem? Oh yeah, by the way I'm new to Dreamwever and web design,
and I think I'm getting a bad headache.

Actually, you could have made a new site definition where the root folder is
exactly the same as the root folder for the old site (i.e., both sites point
to the same files and folders on your hard drive. But you would enter the
new remote site FTP information in the second site's definition.

Connect to the new site, upload the files, and you are done.

questions-

Do you want to keep the old "site definition" so that you can still upload
to the first server?

Do you want to be able to alter the files on these sites, or do you want
them to be exactly the same?

One way-
Two site definitions, one root folder.
Same files, same root folder, but can be uploaded to different server.
Open the New site definition you've made.
dw menu-->Site-->Manage Sites or Edit Sites.
Open that site def for editing.
Click the "advanced" tab at top of wizard window, just because it's easier
to find things.
on the Local Info pane, change the Local Root folder to the one that is
used for the first site.
Note- you'll get a nag warning that the folder is shared with another site-
you can dismiss the nag warning.

Second way-
Two site definitions, two root folders.
Same files to start with, but you can change them and have two distinct
sites down the road.
Use windows explorer or Mac Finder.
Go to the Local Root Folder for the old site def.
Select and copy all files.
Paste them into the New Local Root Folder for site #2

Third way-
If you don't need any ftp access to the first server you uploaded to-
Open That first site def for editing, and in Remote info, change the ftp
info. Delete the 2cd site def. you've created as it's not needed.
