And remember - the vast majority of surfers use the web to get information,
not to have a spiritual experience. Your first responsibility as a
developer is to provide information, in my opinion.

Hmmm....Philosophy....Never thought Id come across that here of all places. I
guess you can philosphize about most anything come to think about it
(philosophy in itself). I guess philosophy stops when instead of talking to
someone about your opinion, you force it upon them. That goes from philosphy
to tyranny. Could it be that exlpaining to someone why you think they should
view a site a certain way is expressing an opinion (even an opinion about your
own work), but forcing them to see something a certain way is tyranny (in a
form)? Maybe they would appreciate it more seeing it from their own
perspective rather than the one you think would be best? Im much more apt to
think a sunset is beautiful from where Im standing, rather than having to move
from my comfort zone to see it from where you are. But that is just my
philosophy. Look at it however you wish.

Quite an erudite abstraction going on there.
We're simply talking about your websites being viewed on other people's
computers. They've got things set up the way they need/like. Hijacking their
preferences in their environment could perhaps be akin to going into a
strangers loungeroom and moving their furniture around to suit yourself.
Good web design is a case of respecting the way they have things set up and
making sure you can get your message across regardless of their preferences
and browsing environment.
