PHP control panel |

Where can I learn more about this ... meaning how can I use 'control panel'
to edit php pages. Right now I don't have the foggiest idea about how to
update a site that has many php pages.
Thanks for any and all help ... I'm in over my head!

I had a PHP person look at this site and he said" There is no Database or
Admin section for this site."

The PHP person suggested that he could reconstruct the template and strip
out the PHP stuff. Does that sound right and reasonable? Is this something
that I can do myself?

sounds like a good opportunity to learn PHP.
Buy a PHP book and dive in it and in your site.
You'll figure it out within a few days.
(that's what I did).

is php really used for anything in the site?
Maybe for the Events listing, so the client can update it themselves?
Do you ~need~ a database? Anything that the client wants to update
themselves, like the Package info?
I'm guessing that most of the pages aren't php, they just have the php file
extension. But maybe i'm wrong- no idea how the site is put together behind
the scenes.

The problem is that the client has no way to update anything themselves. And
there is no database. Really, doing anything in PHP originally was total
overkill and unnecessary. How best do I proceed?
Here's my reply to the PHP people (not the builders of the site) I spoke
with to seek their advice:
"I was hoping that we could come up with a plan that would have me doing
much of the work ... not just doing future maintenance . Is this possible
with a bit more help from you? I imagine that I can come up with a template
and maybe you can guide me on taking out the PHP code. I know it's not as
simple as clicking on those little yellow 'thingies' and deleting them
.....I'd like to play a bigger role in this repair if possible. I would like
to work from what I call a 'pseudo-template' ... which to me is simply a
very basic page with logo, tables, navigation etc. which can be saved over
and over again as the needed for many of the html pages. Sometimes
'editable' regions and/or ssi can get a bit cumbersome.

So the client does need to be able to update the site on their own? If so,
it would seem the approach would be to create the backend and create a
facility (administration) for the client to perform these updates. That's
the approach I often take if the client needs and/or wants to update their
own site. Hard to say if PHP was overkill - maybe this was the plan and it
never came to fruition? You need to get a clear understanding of what the
client wants here - you may already have that, but so far I'm a little foggy
on what exactly you're trying to accomplish.

The client wants me to now be responsible for the site and its updating. I
cannot do that easily now. No admin facility has been made by the original
site designer. The client does not wish to communicate with this person.

okay- so you and the client would be happy if it was a pure static html
site, and you did all the updating using html in dreamweaver?
it comes back to my previous question-
Just what is php used for in the site? Anything?
Maybe a page template system using includes?
Maybe the events listing?
What does a find for <? turn up in the source?
If you're unsure- you could send me the ftp info and i'll scan through it
over the weekend. blu at formdude.com
unless there's some things there i haven't clicked on yet- this would be
easy to get to be a static site (that's assuming that php is really doing
anything)
