Opening my current site to edit in DreamWeaver

message from Dechchard on 21 Jul 2004
I want to start editing my site in Dreamweave(I need to learn it for a class
this year) and I can't open it. I usually edit my site in FrontPage. I can open
a few pages but they are read-only, but I made them writable. But when I go to
save the pages it seems like it just wants to save it to the computer. I want
it to just update the pages like it does in FrontPage. Also when I open a page,
none of the images will load. It just has the broken image symbol. I'm assuming
that's because the image isn't on this comp or something. Can anyone help me?

www.gameforest.com is my site BTW

In Dreamweaver you edit your pages locally on your computer, then upload
(PUT) them to the web site. It sounds like you've used FP's ability to edit
directly at the web site, which is actually a pretty dangerous thing to
do....if you make a mistake you've just messed up the original "on the web"
copy.

Also, you're right that you need to download the pages and all associated
graphics and files to your computer so you can see the images when you're
working. Then upload everything you've changed and -- voila! -- you're in
business.

Actually, you can do this using an RDS connection in DW. When you create a
new site, you are asked if it's a Site or an RDS. Selecting the latter will
allow you to edit the live files. It's dangerous, however.

Dangerous in the sense that you are editing the live file. Make a mistake
and you have lost your backup.

Sure - you can delete files from the local or from the remote site with DW.

TS Eliot said "...a cat is not a dog." I say "... Dreamweaver is not
FrontPage." This is not how Dreamweaver works.

Yes - open DW. Press F1. Read about defining a local and a remote site.
Forget FrontPage and start learning how to use DW.
