OT: Real Audio vs. MP3 vs. Windows Media

message from Frozen Carp on 22 Jul 2004
I need to put audio clips and well as sound tracks online, and I'm looking
for comments on using the two formats. Also, if anyone has any experience
using "free" internet radio broadcasting services, I would be interested in
hearing about your experience with them.

As a user, I hate Real. I prefer MP3 or anything I can play on Windows
Media, for reasons than I can take time to list. Real used to be good, about
5-7 years ago. But it's been passed up, big time.

QuickTime is something I like also.

Again, I'm speaking as a user, not a developer. I have never done any sites
where I used audio or video.

I hate Real because when you install their software it leaves a lot of
droppings all over the place. I have never seen a problem that tried to take
control of everything and install so much advertising and the like. They
wonder why they aren't doing well? Shame the can't see the forest for all of
the crap they install on ones computer.

Insert a simple link to an MP3 file, audio clips (voice) can be sampled
at a much lower rate (11khz), and thus one quarter the size of a file @
22khz.

I've done sites with extensive audio and video. The format question mostly
comes down to accessibility vs. quality. In audio, MP3 is the most common
format and is playable by virtually every audio program, so you can pretty
well guarantee everyone will be able to hear it. It's not the best as far as
quality goes though. RealAudio, Liquid Audio, Windows Media Player, and
Quicktime (more for video than audio) are generally better quality, but
again, they use proprietary formats that require the user have that
particular player. If you're a stickler about quality you may go one way. If
you want to make sure everyone can play them, MP3 is the way. You can always
use a higher bit rate and make a better quality, but of course it's going to
make for a larger file.

I hope that helps.....a little anyway.
