OT: Any network and Mac gurus out there?

message from Dan Vendel *GOF* on 23 Jul 2004
I'm trying to help my bro finally hook up to a new ISP with DSL, but
something is wrong with the 'puter, the ethernet cable or the modem. I

well, to eliminate the obvious, did you try swapping ethernet cables yet?

Does the router indicate the port that is connected to your machine is
active (there should be a green LED indicating that there is a connection).

As for the USB modem, those don't typically have drivers for Macs.

Yeah, all LEDs are shining as they're supposed to. Even spoke to the
D-Link support that confirmed that everything was fine.

Yes, I asked my bro about the cable pretty soon, but he didn't have any
other. I'll bring a few tomorrow home to him.

Yuk, I didn't even know people could use USB for this kind of stuff, and
felt really uncomfortable trying it. It was supposed to work with a Mac,
though. But now that's history....

Thanks, Darrel.

darrel replied to Dan Vendel *GOF* on 23 Jul 2004
Well, definitely check the cable. It could be a crossover cable which can
cause problems on the older macs.

Otherwise, it sounds like the Mac isn't seeing the router. Are you using
DHCP on the Mac to receive an IP address from the router? If so, make sure
the DHCP information is set up correctly.

Yes, I'll look into that.

The Mac doesn't see the router (=the modem) and obviously, it can't then
connect to it either. And it doesn't recognize the external Ethernet
card I mounted.

Have tried both PPPoE and DHCP, with and without AppleTalk switched on
to find the router - no go. The configuration is OK, but have tested
umpteen variations for the hell of it...

Dan,

I have 4G Digital Audio, with updated CPU card (1,4 GHz) and updated
graphic card. OSX 10.3.x.

I can use both, USB DSL-modem (Hermstedt), that works excellently, and
another ethernet DSL-modem connected via a cable and the airport card.

I have no problems, all works smoothly.

AFAIK you don't need a driver to set up D-Link DSL 300G (?), you do it
via a browser.

Today I have no time, but maybe tommorow I will try to help you. Be
patient please if I am too slow.

Dan Vendel *GOF* replied to WM - XYZ on 23 Jul 2004
Yeah, except from when some thunder made the built-in ethernet in one of
my Macs unusable, I have had no problems either.

Yup, but can't find the modem with the browser, no browser at all, so I
can't set it up. Have even pinged the darn thing from the computer, but
no response at all.

Tomorrow is fine with me. It's my brother that's "suffering" from having
to use his dial-up modem. And I'll try to be patient. ;-)

Thanks for reaching out, man!

Dan,

I can see that you have experience with DSL (you have used it). In such
a case I have no idea what's wrong.

I would:

1. first try with the built-in ethernet card (can't you check it for
example with a printer if it is OK?),

2. check in the preferences>Network>NetworkConfiguration_menu (in OSX
10.3, in 10.2.8 should be similar) if ethernet is checked and if it is
in the firs place (at the very top) - if your brother is using a dial
modem, this option could be left at the top and the Mac just tries to
connect with it and not DSL (once I made this mystake),

3. try intead of connect automatically, to type the name of the network
(for example my ethernet modem by default had the name WLAN) in the
preferences>Network - just to see what will happen.

Is there any message in the preferences>Network>NetworkStatus?

Sorry that can't help more.

Dan Vendel *GOF* replied to WM - XYZ on 24 Jul 2004
Since I thought the built-in card was toasted due e.g. thunder, I
installed an external card. But the Mac is refusing to see the new one,
it insists on the built-in. So, I assume it does that because it finds
nothing wrong with the built-in. This leads me to believe that the
problem is caused by something after the Ethernet plug, i.e. either in
the cable to the modem, the modem's in port (hardware issue) or the
software inside the modem.

I've checked that, and even removed the dial-up option once.

I'll try that.

Nah...as I recall (I'm home at my place now), I got no strange messages.

No worries, you've been very supportive. I'll drop by my brother's place
later today with some new ideas:

A new, working (and tested) ethernet cable
I'll reboot the modem while the computer is shut off.
I'll test some configurations
I'll test your suggestions

Cheers,

Dan Vendel *GOF* replied to Dan Vendel *GOF* on 24 Jul 2004
Nope.
It seems as if the modem isn't co-operating.

WM - XYZ replied to Dan Vendel *GOF* on 24 Jul 2004
Is there something (a message) in the Preferences>Network>Network_Status
menu?

You should see the current status of each activ art of network
connection, also for the ethernet if the cable is attached. This may
give you a hint about what is happening.

Joe Makowiec replied to Dan Vendel *GOF* on 23 Jul 2004
Has your brother's Mac ever connected to a network? Not being
conversant with Macs - is there a way to delete or reset the previous
network configuration, if any?

I couldn't find the router you mentioned on DLink's site. Is the
router set up as a DHCP server? Can you talk to it from any other
boxes?

Or try this - it works on Linux, might work on Mac; you need to be root
($ = command prompt; [my comments]):
$ifconfig eth0
[should give the configuration for the first found ethernet card. If
it gives something, but not 192.168.0.1xx, try]
$ifdown eth0
[releases the ethernet card]
$ifup eth0
[restarts the ethernet card and requests a new IP from the DHCP server]

Dan Vendel *GOF* replied to Joe Makowiec on 23 Jul 2004
Not him, but the previous owner of the computer might have - 'twas the
university here in town.
I considered that, and created several "accounts", hoping I'll create
new data, but failed....

Well, the issue is that I assume it'll be a DHCP server, but siince I
can't connect to it, that's written in the stars. Have not tried from
any other box. There isn't any.

I'll try Darrels suggestion with a new cable tomorrow. Something tells
me that it's something that trivial. If that doesn't work, I'll
accidentally pour molten lead over the box and make my bro buy a new. :-)
