MX will not load

message from virtgolfer on 22 Jul 2004
My Dreavweaver MX stopped loading. When I start the program it brings up the
initial screen and says it loading the various components, but never completed.
The original screen goes away, but the application does not appear on the
screen. It is a job that is shown under running applications in the Windows
Task Manager.

Any suggestions?

Diagnosing such problems is very hard without complete information about
your computer and its operating environment. Can you please tell me -

0. When you right click on the DW executable (dreamweaver.exe), then select
Properties > Version, what is the version number you see in the properties
panel?
1. What is your OS?
2. What is your AntiVirus?
3. Is your AntiVirus doing realtime protection?
4. What is your Firewall?
5. What other background programs are running?
6. What Dreamweaver extensions do you have installed?
7. Are you *running* DMX from a network shared drive?
8. Where are your 'local' files? Are they on a network shared drive?
9. Have you ever been able to run DMX or is this a recent failure?
10. Does this only seem to happen with certain files/sites?
11. Does recreating the site cache (SITE | Recreate Site Cache) help?
12. Are you using *any* OS-improving utilities like "TweakUI" for example?
13. Are you logging on as an ADMINISTRATOR, or do you have admin
privileges?

0. When you right click on the DW executable (dreamweaver.exe), then select
Properties > Version, what is the version number you see in the properties
panel? 6.1.1842.0
1. What is your OS? XP pro
2. What is your AntiVirus? Norton and it is up to date
3. Is your AntiVirus doing realtime protection? yes
4. What is your Firewall? Mcaffee and it is up to date
5. What other background programs are running? I have removed all and it still
occurs.
6. What Dreamweaver extensions do you have installed? none
7. Are you *running* DMX from a network shared drive? no
8. Where are your 'local' files? Are they on a network shared drive? local
drive
9. Have you ever been able to run DMX or is this a recent failure? recent,
just today
10. Does this only seem to happen with certain files/sites? no, all of them
11. Does recreating the site cache (SITE | Recreate Site Cache) help? How can
I do that if the screen does not load?
12. Are you using *any* OS-improving utilities like "TweakUI" for example? no
13. Are you logging on as an ADMINISTRATOR, or do you have admin privileges?
yes

the funny thing is that the program does load into memory, and if for example
I press alt-F the file menu appears. I can get any menu to appear if I know the
correct keys to press, but the code, design and other windows do not appear.

I have gone back to yesterday's config (restore) and this is still happening.
I have even re-installed XP pro, but to no avail. I then downloaded MX 2004 (I
an running 6.1) and it works just fine. Is there a configuration file I can
look at as I can not locate my MX CDs and thus would have a problem
re-installing.

You can try renaming the folder called Configuration (Program
Files/Macromedia/Dreamweaver MX/Configuration) to anything other than
Configuration. Restart your system and then restart DW. Does it work now?

If it does not, then turn off your antivirus and your firewall, and
disconnect from the net. Start DW. Does it work now?

If it does, then turn your AntiVirus back on, but exclude the Macromedia
program folder hierarchy from your realtime scan, and start DW again? This
is a good thing to do under any circumstances.

If that fails to solve the problem, then I recommend you contact Macromedia
directly and use one of your one-on-one support incidents.
