Help a newbie out with his dataase |
| message from {CRW}Shinigami on 15 Jul 2004 |
Howdy. I'm new to dreamweaver in general, and these forums, so I'm sorry if i
ask dumb questions.
Player name | Kills | Games played | Player Insignia
It seems the easiest way to do that is to create a database, make a page with
a table that draws information from the database, and a page to upload new data
into the database. I think the way to start is to create a database in MS
access, but from there i have little to no idea how to go about it. Help files
confuse me lol.
Any advice?

Hi {CRW}Shinigami,
You've got the right idea. Once you've defined a site that uses a specific
server model (like ASP or ColdFusion) You should see an Application tab in
the Insert bar. Just about all you need is right there; you can insert,
update, and delete records. Also explore the menu when you click the (+)
button of the Server Behaviors panel and Bindings panel.
If you're looking for guidance and direction beyond Dreamweaver's F1 help,
you may wish to consider:
"Dynamic Development Using ASP and Macromedia Dreamweaver MX 2004
with: Daniel Short
http://movielibrary.lynda.com/html/modPage.asp?ID=91
[which] is a movie-based tutorial designed to familiarize Dreamweaver MX
2004 users with dynamic development using Microsoft Active Server Pages
(ASP). The training begins with a brief introduction to database design and
best practices, then shows you how to use Dreamweaver's built-in server
behaviors to create a blog application with an administrative backend.
Exercise files accompany the training, allowing you to follow along and
learn at your own pace. "
Disclaimer: I know Dan and work with him on DWfaq.com, Cartweaver, and some
book titles. I don't recommend the movies because I know him. The movies
are truly an excellent way to learn this sort of thing, especially for
visual learners.
Whether you're using ASP or not, the concepts/logic are very similar if not
identical to other server models when it comes to using Dreamweaver. The
underlying code will be different of course. So if you choose this, or view
other tutorials online that are not of your chosen server model, you should
be able to walk away with at least the fundamental concepts (assuming the
author does a good job! :-)).
Hope this helps, and good luck to you.
~Angela
