?Grabbing an expiring domain name?

Hello,

I've been watching a domain name that I'd love to own, and it's due to
expire this Friday. The current owner's been sitting on it for the
last few years, with no site at that address. It doesn't appear that
he's too interested in using the domain, and as far as I can tell
there's been no effort to renew it.

Any suggestions on the best way to grab it when it comes due Friday?

Would it come due at midnight, or is it, say, one year from when you
purchase (i.e. June 23, 2003 5:15 PM to June 23, 2004 5:15 PM).

The domain isn't anything earth shattering like "cocacola.com" or
"microsoft.com"; it just fits perfectly with a site I'm developing and
it would be put to good use.

Any suggestions? Thanks in advance...
