Edit Preferences in Dreamweaver MX 2004 |
| message from Marilynonline on 17 Jul 2004 |
I'm so frustrated trying to clean up the extra style tags and <th tags
Dreamweaver insists on creating for me ... it's taking me 3 times as long to
get anything done and I can't just do my own coding. This is starting to feel
like FrontPage 5 years ago. Does anyone know how to turn off these 'helpful'
features? I'm on a Mac ... the help menu says to go to "Edit, Preferences" on
the Mac, but alas, there is no "Preferences" listed under "Edit" on my Mac.
Anyone have any ideas? Thank you so much. I'm so frustrated that I'm ready to
abandon this version of Dreamweaver if I can't find a solution.

Dear Angela,
Thank you so much for Cmd-U! It did bring up the preferences window. Thank
you. And I didn't see anything in there that would prompt Dreamweaver to add
the <th tags, or add styles if I don't ask for them. This didn't happen for me
in Dreamweaver MX, but it sure does in MX 2004. Everytime I insert a table it
creates <th tags instead of <td tags for the header row and first column ... I
can see the benefit in some situations, and I'm glad to know it can do that,
but most of the time I won't want it. What version of Dreamweaver are you
using? What Mac OS are you using? I'm on 10.3. I wonder if my OS might
affect anything. Marilyn

How are you inserting the Tables?
if i recall correctly, if you use the Insert Menu to insert a menu, the
dialog box that comes up asks if you want to use Headers on top or side or
both. If that option isn't given- look for an options button in that insert
table dialog box.

Hello Marilyn,
You're welcome. If you forget the shortcut, it is in the Dreamweaver menu as
well. Apparently it is a Macintosh standard to have a menu named for the
Application you're using. The menu named after the application is where
Preferences are always stored, no matter what program you're using
(assuming the manufacturer follows guidelines).
As for the <th> tags... I'm assuming you're inserting tables by clicking on
the table icon. Go to the Preferences dialog, click General in the Category
listing on the left. Make sure that there is a checkmark in the box adjacent
to Show dialog when inserting objects. Click OK.
Next, go ahead and insert a table using the icon. When the dialog appears,
set the Header option to none. You can either go back and turn off the
dialogs in Preferences or leave them on so you can choose how you want the
table inserted every time.
As for other markup, you'll have to give me specifics if you'd like me to
offer some suggestion. :-) For the most part (and yes there are some
exceptions), Dreamweaver only puts in the code we're telling it to, and it
is just a matter of us learning how to properly instruct Dreamweaver.
Good luck,
~Angela

Hello Marilyn,
On the Mac it is Dreamweaver> Preferences or Cmd+U.
Can you give specific examples of markup you'd rather not see beyond th
tags? Dreamweaver never adds th tags that I don't tell it to add, so I'm
curious how you're arriving at this code.
Thanks,
~Angela
